Roll up your sleeves and jump into the wonderful world of color while having lots of hands-on fun with your child! Young artists will make beautiful icons of spring in a wide array of materials while learning about patterns, textures, and colors found in nature. Projects include designing patterns to be applied to flowerpots, and creating butterflies, insects, and flowers in 2 and 3-dimensions. |

Inspired by paintings in the Museum galleries, students will create their own works of art in pencil and pastel while learning the basics of composition, light, and realistic perspective. Children will sketch in the studios and on Heritage Green, and then develop their sketches into finished works of art. Materials included in course fee. |
Summer Art Camps

Session 1: June 16–18
|
Children will be surrounded by art in the Museum galleries, studying famous artists, then taking what they have learned into the studios. They will learn the elements of color and design, and apply them to printmaking, batik, and textile arts. Young artists will leave with creations they are proud of and enthusiasm to carry them throughout the summer! All materials and daily snack included in fee. |
Session 2: June 23–25

Using the Museum’s landmark exhibition, A Portrait of Greenville, as a springboard, young artists will express what Greenville means to them in a wonderful array of art forms. Camp will include: visits to the Museum galleries, sketching on Heritage Green, a collage expressing what makes Greenville special, and a sculpture of a favorite symbol of summer in Greenville. Children will have fun creating art to treasure for years to come. All materials and daily snack included in fee. |
Session 3: July 7–9
|
Faces in art will fascinate children as they go on gallery walks throughout the Museum. Each day, students will learn about facial proportions, capturing expressions, design and decorative elements, and they will apply this new understanding to creations of their own. Projects include making a self-portrait in 3-D, in their own likeness, creating a cartoon character, learning about casting in plaster and crafting a decorative mask. Materials and daily snack included in fee. |
Serious Drawing for Middle School Students

This drawing program is for middle school students who want to develop and strengthen their drawing skills as a foundation for years of creativity to come. Students begin in the Museum art studios, working from still life compositions to learn the basic elements of drawing, including line, shape, value, form, composition, and perspective. Then, it’s off to the outdoors to sketch on location. Instructor Bruce Bunch has years of experience working with students of all ages. He is known for his ability to combine an extensive knowledge of art with entertaining methods of teaching. Each student will be given a sketchbook for drawing in class and extra pages to fill throughout the rest of the summer. All materials and daily snack included in fee. |
Session 4: July 14–16
|
Count the ways the outdoors can be an inspiration for fabulous art! Children will harness the sun to create solar photographs, make wind chimes to capture the sounds of summer, and use beautiful colored glass and tiles to create mosaic stepping-stones. Prepare your homes now for these wonderful additions. All materials and daily snack included in fee. |
